Bird Watching in Pecan Island, LA

Southwestern Louisiana is home to a wide variety of spectacular bird species year-round that birding enthusiasts can enjoy during their stay at the stunning Miller-Green Lodge in Pecan Island. Our wonderful lodge is located between Houston, TX to the West; New Orleans, LA to the East; and sits just South of Lafayette, LA. Given the area’s coastal climate, we welcome both migratory and local songbirds, Woodpeckers, Hummingbirds, Eagles, Ibis, and much more – so be sure to bring your camera and your binoculars!

The Best Birding Spots in Louisiana

When you book your stay at our beautiful 2,400 square foot, four bedroom/five bathroom lodge you can take advantage of the 25+ miles of nature trails along the cheniers – coastal woodlands surrounded by live oaks and pecan trees – where Yellow-Billed Cuckoos and Orchard Orioles are known to roost.

The area also features the Vermilion Birding Loop, which spans from Lafayette to Pecan Island, and offers birders spectacular views from woodlands to wetlands in beautiful Southern Louisiana. You can expect to see Roseate Spoonbills, Snowy Egrets and other wading birds and waterfowl along the Loop.

A Nature Lover's Haven

During your stay at Miller-Green Lodge, be sure to take a guided boat tour with our experienced local guides for a chance to spot sea-faring birds such as Pelicans, Herons, and Osprey on the picturesque White Lake or along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.

Kayaking or canoeing through the bayous also offers ample opportunity to spot nesting birds among the marshes, especially during the spring migration around mid-April when many species flock to our region.

Just to the North of the lodge, Jennings is home the annual Yellow Rails and Rice Festival held every year at the end of October through early November across farms and prairies in the Jeff Davis Parish. This fun local festival is dedicated to viewing these unique and elusive birds while observing and appreciating their impact on Louisiana’s farming and coastal wetlands culture.
